IMAT Chemistry preparation:

Under official MUR decree, the IMAT contains exactly 15 chemistry questions out of 60 total questions. Each correct answer awards +1.5 points, an unanswered question awards 0 points, and an incorrect answer deducts -0.4 points. Chemistry provides a maximum of 22.5 raw points, representing 25% of the total 90 points available on the exam.

The syllabus encompasses General & Physical Chemistry (stoichiometry, solutions, acids/bases, equilibrium, redox, thermodynamics, gas laws), Inorganic Chemistry (periodic trends, chemical bonding, intermolecular forces, atomic structure), and Organic Chemistry (functional groups, reaction types, isomerism, and essential biomolecules such as amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids). The -0.4 deduction penalizes random guessing. Statistically, guessing blindly between five options has a negative expected return (-0.02 points per question). Our preparation program trains students in aggressive elimination: if you can definitively eliminate 2 or 3 options, your expected return turns positive, making informed guessing strategically viable.

Historical exam analyses from 2011 to 2025 demonstrate that Solution Concentrations (molarity, dilution), Acid-Base equilibria and pH calculations, Stoichiometry, and Organic Functional Groups (alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, esters) account for more than 60% of all chemistry questions on the exam.

A student with a solid high school science background typically requires 8 to 12 weeks of focused preparation (60–80 total study hours) for the chemistry section alone. No calculators, formula sheets, or periodic tables are permitted during the IMAT. Students must perform all calculations mentally or on scratch paper. Consequently, our preparation drills emphasize mental arithmetic shortcuts, scientific notation factoring, and approximation techniques.

For high-demand universities like Milan (IMS), Bologna, and Rome Sapienza, non-EU cut-off scores generally range between 45 and 55+ points. Achieving 18.0 to 21.0 points out of 22.5 in Chemistry establishes a decisive competitive buffer that eases pressure on physics and mathematics.
